Preparation after your arrival in Germany

The day of your arrival

After your arrival, remeber to go through the customs. Basically, Taiwanese passport can benefit you by giving you access to EasyPass in Germany, but you still need to search in advance and ask staffs on-site further for more details. In addition, how to scan your passport near these EasyPass gates is another important issue you should ask.

Once you make sure you have carried all your luggage, when to get your key of your accomodation and the time you can arrive there is matched, you can prepare yourself to continue. Normally, these airports can provide you with free-WIFI, so you should use google map to navigate immediately if you have no SIM card for the access to Internet. Apart from spending a forturn on Taxi, you can try the public transport as I did here. Be attentive to this: although you will not be exmained for legal tickets by entering stations, you will be heavily fined many times of the ticket price if you haven’t bought the ticket and you are caught on the public transport. Thus, do not take any chances. Moreover, even if you are a student, you will have no certificate other than your student card to utilize your rights of use during some periods. Therefore, you should consider yourself as one of the public without any privilege under the condition that you just arrive there and do not have your student card.

Even though everyone should be fine with google map, I still kindly remind you with the attached picture.
“Leuchtenbergring” is the last stop of the train you should take, so take this picture for example, you only need to check whether the train now is S1 and heads to “Leuchtenbergring” after arrving in the platform. This information can be confirmed via the platform display or the display in paper before entering the platform.

Einzelfahrkarte(Single ticket).

Ticket Machine:

Stamp Machin:

As for how to use the public transport, we should first put aside buses. For S-Bahn or U-Bahn, normally, there are two ways to purchase your tickets. You buy tickets either online via MVV app (only avialable for 2 hours) or on the spot via ticket machines near where you enter the station. In the process of using machines, you can switch the language to English if you want. However, for those buing tickets from machines, you should validate your tickets by putting your tickets inside the stamp machines nearby where you enter the station. If you don’t have time to dig into every kind of ticket, you can select “Einzelfahrkarte” or “Single ticket” after entering your destinations and the station you are inside.

After arriving your accomodation, please keep in mind that most supermarkets selling cheap items are not open on Sunday except resturants and whether there is any German holiday around the corner. Therefore, you can decide whether you should buy more food based on these two points. For example, I arrived there on Saturday, first Octobor, so I need to prepare food on Sunday and the next Monday, German National Day, as well. Mostly, you can buy all your food and cleaning tools in the supermarkets around your house like some very popular supermarkets ALDI or LIDL at very low price. Now, we can call it a day on your fisrt day in Germany.

During Two weeks after your arrival

Other preparation after your arrival

Opeining a bank account

Given the risk of use in online banks, I recommand yo to open your bank account of a brick-and-mortar bank. Despite the fact that most banks there need their customers to pay a monthly payment of custodian fee, they also provide students with a student special plan so that you don’t need to pay them for more than 10 years, like Stadtsparkasse München.

MVV學期票
MVV semester ticket

After receiving your student card, you can take advantage of most MVV vehicles, including S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Tram, Bus and some regional trains in Munich according to the webiste above. However, your courses usually do not fall on these periods, so it is still a better and worthwhile choice to purchase a semester ticket at 209 euros.
